Listen to this!

Four centuries of opera highlights: great overtures, beautiful arias, thrilling ensembles, and other favourite pieces. (Linked to YouTube where possible.)

This list is selective, subjective, and evolving. Your favourite piece might be missing because I’ve forgotten it (some operas I haven’t heard for aeons), or because I haven’t warmed to it. (Anyway, if it’s famous, it’s big and tough enough to take care of itself!) But the list will expand.

That said, I’d encourage you to listen to something unfamiliar – from Paliashvili’s Abesalom da Eteri or Moniuszko’s Straszny dwór, for instance – than to hear Carmen or Figaro for the umpteenth time.
